The Twin Abdel-Rahman and Belal Mohamed Abd Al-Zaher, Born in the Suez governorate, are 18-year old children who spent two years in prison following their accusation of joining a terrorist group. They were included in Case No. 1530 of 2019- Supreme State Security, known in the media as “Joker Case”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, how did children at this age get imprisoned?
During September 2019, and amidst extensive demonstrations in Suez governorate, Belal and Abdel-Rahman were sitting with their friends in front of their house, which happens to be very close to the demonstrations. They were talking in a curious and astonished gaze about the demonstrations, which they probably do not know their meaning considering their age. One of them decided to approach and take some photos with his mobile of something that might seem impressive for a child of his age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the end of the demonstrations, three months have passed and the two children have been living their daily lives, However, at the beginning of 2020, specifically at the dawn of January 3rd, the police and national security forces set up ambushes and raided the house of Bilal and Abdel-Rahman. They searched the entire place. Nevertheless, they did not find any seizures or confiscations indicating by any means that the two children are involved in politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although there is no evidence proving that the two children committed any acts of violence or terrorism, they were arrested. As usual, the two children remained forcibly disappeared for a long time, illegally and inhumanely detained in the National Security headquarters and the Central Security camps. They suffer many violations, chief among them beating and illegal detention, in violation of Article No. 36 of the Egyptian Criminal Procedure Code which emphasizes: the defendant should be brought before the prosecution within 24 hours of their arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 24th, 2020, The two children appeared before the Supreme State Security prosecution after their disappearance for more than one month and a half. They were accused of joining a terrorist group with knowledge of its purposes, and they were listed in the Joker case.
At that time, the child Bilal was subjected to a legal violation. He was interrogated without the presence of a lawyer, in violation of Article No. 124 of the Egyptian Criminal Procedure Code, which stipulates: “If the defendant does not have a lawyer, or his lawyer did not attend after being invited, the investigator, on their own, must appoint him lawyer”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, we can ask an important question: Given the fact that their house is nearby, is it a crime to merely pass by a setting where demonstrations are taking place?
Well, it is normal as children may be eager to know what is happening next to their house.
Does taking a snapshot on the mobile phone of a child who is fascinated by an event that may be strange to him is worth the child\u2019s imprisonment for two years, without finding any seizures, confiscations, or anything that indicates that the child joined a group practicing terrorism or acts of violence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
