The Photojournalist Alia Awadh: Five Years of Prison and Medical Negligence
علياء نصر الدين حسن نصر عواض, المشهورة إعلامياً باسم “علياء عواد”، مصورة صحفية، تم القبض عليها مرتين على ذمة ذات القضية رقم 451 لسنة 2014 حصر أمن الدولة العليا، والمعروفة إعلامياً بقضية “كتائب حلوان”.
The photojournalist Alia Nasr El-Din Hassan Nasr Awadh, known in the media as Alia Awad, was arrested twice in connection with the same case No. 451 of 2014, the Supreme State Security, known in the media as the Helwan Brigades case.
طيب، مين علياء، وإيه اللي حصل معاها؟
علياء عواد مصورة صحفية شابة، عندها 37 سنة, هوايتها التصوير الصحفي, ولأنها من سكان منطقة حلوان؛ فكرت تنزل وتصور المظاهرات والأحداث اللي بتحصل في ذات المنطقة زي بالظبط ما صورت أحداث 30 يونيو 2013, مع العلم انها غير منتمية بأي شكل من الأشكال لأي كيان أو جماعة, وكل المعروف عنها رفضها للظلم والعنف بكافة أشكالهم.
Then, who is Alia and what happened to her ?
Alia Awad is a young 37 year-old photojournalist. Her hobby is photojournalism. Because she is a resident of Helwan, she wanted to film the demonstrations and events that are taking place in the same area, like she did in the events of June 30th, 2013. In fact, she is not affiliated in any way with any entity or group, and she is known for her rejection of injustice and violence in all their forms.
في أوائل شهر سبتمبر 2014 تم اقتحام محل إقامة علياء -منزل خالتها- من قبل قوات الأمن, لكن علياء كانت في زيارة لخالتها الأخرى في محافظة اسكندرية، ونتيجة لعدم وجود علياء في محل إقامتها المعتاد تم القبض على الخالة وابنها كوسيلة للضغط على علياء عشان تسلم نفسها.
In early September 2014, Alias residence, which is her aunts house, was raided by the security forces. However, Alia was visiting her other aunt in Alexandria. Since Alia wasn’t in her habitual residence, the aunt and her son were arrested as a pressure tool on Alia to turn herself in.
علياء مستحملتش إن أهلها يتبهدلوا بسببها، وسلمت نفسها لأقرب قسم شرطة، وتم احتجازها رغم عدم وجود دليل أو حرز يثبت اتهامها بأي تهمة.
Alia couldn’t resist that her family are humiliated because of her. Therefore, she turned herself in to the nearest police station and was detained despite the lack of evidence or possession proving the allegations.
وبعدها تم اقتيادها لمقر الأمن الوطنى ومواجهتها بفيديو لمجموعة متظاهرين ملثمين، وارغامها على الاعتراف إنها صورته ونزلته على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي.
Subsequently, she was taken to the National Security Headquarters and confronted with a video of a group of masked demonstrators. She was forced to confess that she had filmed and posted it on social media.
ظهرت علياء أمام نيابة أمن الدولة العليا على خلفية اتهامها بالانضمام لجماعة ارهابية والترويج لأغراضها, ورغم إقرارها إنها صورت الفيديو فعلاً إلا إنها نفت بشكل واضح أي صلة بينها وبين نزول الفيديو على مواقع التواصل، وأكدت إنها مسحته تماماً، ورغم كل ده؛ تم ادراج اسمها ضمن قائمة المتهمين لتصبح الفتاة المتهمة الوحيدة في قضية كتائب حلوان.
Alia appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on the grounds of joining a terrorist group and promoting its purposes. Although she actually admitted filming the video, she clearly denied her connection with the videos release on social media and asserted that she completely deleted it. Nevertheless, her name was included in the defendants list to be the only accused woman in the Helwan Brigades case.
بعد مرور ما يزيد عن عامين تم إطلاق سراح علياء من قبل رئيس محكمة جنايات القاهرة، وصرح إن سبب إخلاء سبيلها هو سبب إنساني؛ لإنها بنت وحيدة وسط 214 رجل وطفل.
After more than two years, Alia was released by the head of the Cairo Criminal Court. He stated that the reason for her release is humanitarian since she is the only girl among 214 men and boys.
للأسف معاناة علياء مخلصتش هنا…
لأنه بتاريخ 23 أكتوبر 2017 -أي بعد مرور سنة من تاريخ إطلاق سراحها- وأثناء وجودها في الجلسة الخاصة بالقضية، تم التحفظ عليها، وظهرت بعدها بخمسة أيام في قسم شرطة حلوان، واتنقلت بعدها لسجن القناطر في أوائل عام 2018.
Unfortunately, the suffering of Alia didn’t end there…
On October 23rd, 2017, one year after her release, she was held in custody during her presence in the hearing of the case. Five days later, she appeared in Helwan Police Station, and was transferred to Al Qanater prison in early 2018.
علياء من وقتها وحتى الآن بتعاني ظروف صحية صعبة جداً، لانه من خلال الفحص الطبي اللي بيتم في مستشفى السجن، تم الكشف عن وجود أورام على الرحم، وتم نقلها للمستشفى أكثر من مرة، وفي النهاية خضعت علياء لعملية استئصال الأورام الموجودة على الرحم، وبعدها ظهرت مشكلة صحية تانية وهي مرضها بالناسور في الظهر، ورغم إنها عملت عملية لكي الناسور ، إلا إنه محتاج لتكرار العملية بتقنيات أفضل، وده لأنه مسبب لها نزيف مستمر، وحتى الآن علياء بتعاني بسببه، ومحتاجة لعملية تانية في اسرع وقت، وده مش متوفر نظراً لضعف إمكانية مستشفى السجن.
Since then, Alia have been suffering from very difficult health conditions. According to the medical examination in the prison hospital, she was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. She was transferred to the hospital more than once. In the end, Alia underwent an operation to remove the tumors.Subsequently, another health problem appeared, which is fistula on her back although she underwent a surgery to treat it. However, the latter still needs a reoperation with better techniques. That’s because it caused her continuous bleeding. To date, Alia suffers because of it and she needs another operation as soon as possible, which is not possible due to the poor capacities of the prison hospital.
علياء قربت تكمل 5 سنوات من وقت القبض عليها للمرة الثانية، وحالتها النفسية والصحية في تدهور مستمر، مع تعنت واضح في استجابة أو تنفيذ أي طلبات مقدمة لصاحلها.
Five years have nearly passed since Alia’s second arrest. Her psychological and health conditions are continuously deteriorating, with obvious intransigence in responding or implementing any requests made in her favor.
علياء مجرد بنت هوايتها التصوير، كل اللي عملته أنها صورت حدث موجود بالفعل، متستاهلش تعيش كل السنين دي محبوسة.
Alia is just a girl whose hobby is photography. All she did was that she filmed an event that already exists. She does not deserve to spend all these years in prison.
